Exercise Is Medicine

Many factors influence the quality and longevity of our lives. Among these are genetics, lifestyle, dietary concerns and many others. Of course, we have very little, if any, control over genetics. However, our lifestyle and activity level are factors within our scope of influence.

Understanding the vital relationship between exercise and our overall health is fundamental to a happy and sustained lifestyle. Studies and research dating back to the early ages have born out the vital nature of keeping our bodies fit and active. Ancient philosophers also new of the importance of being physically fit. For example, Hippocrates, an ancient Greek physician born around 460 B.C. is quoted as saying,

“Eating alone will not keep a man well; he must also take exercise. For food and exercise, while possessing opposite qualities, yet work together to produce health. For it is the nature of exercise to use up material, but of food and drink to make good deficiencies. And it is necessary, as it appears, to discern the power of the various exercises” (Hippocrates of Cos, Volume 1)
